When is the best time of day for a photo shoot?

The best time for outdoor photoshoots is usually during what photographers call the 'golden hour,' which occurs shortly after sunrise and shortly before sunset. This is when the sun is lower in the sky, creating a soft, warm, and diffused light that is universally flattering for portraits and landscapes alike. The gentle, indirect lighting of the golden hour helps to avoid harsh shadows and highlights, resulting in more even exposures and beautiful skin tones.

If you are open to an early morning session, sunrise offers a serene and quiet atmosphere, often with fewer crowds and the possibility of mist or fog, which can add a magical touch to the photos.

Sunset, on the other hand, provides a warm and dramatic backdrop, with vibrant colors painting the sky as the sun dips below the horizon. The colors during sunset can be more intense than sunrise due to atmospheric conditions throughout the day.

While the golden hour is generally the ideal choice, other times of the day can be used if needed. Overcast days provide soft, even light that is also excellent for portraits.

Even in the middle of the day, when the sun is highest and harshest, beautiful images can still be captured by using shaded areas or techniques like backlighting with reflectors or diffusers.

Ultimately, the best time for a photoshoot depends on the desired aesthetic and mood. The preferences can be discussed to choose the time that will best achieve the desired outcome for the portraits.
